5 Essential Tips for Choosing the Right Wedding Photographer

When it comes to your wedding day, there are a lot of decisions to be made. But one of the most important is choosing the right photographer. After all, this is someone who will capture some of your happiest memories and preserve them for years to come—that’s a huge deal! It’s essential that you find a photographer who not only understands your vision and style, but is someone you trust to capture your most meaningful moments.

From photography style to gut instincts, there are several things to consider before you sign the dotted line. As a wedding photographer, I know how overwhelming all of these decisions can be!

So, here are my top five tips and things to consider to help you choose the wedding photographer of your dreams.

1. Have an Idea of Your Style

Before you start looking for a wedding photographer, consider what kind of style you’re looking for in terms of photography. Do you like more traditional photographs, or do you prefer a more modern aesthetic? Do you want bright and bold colors or a more muted and romantic look? This is your time to browse Pinterest boards (the fun part for every bride!) to get an idea on your vision for your wedding day.

Then, take a look at portfolios from different photographers in your area and make sure their work fits with the look and feel that resonates with you. Pay close attention to how consistent their portfolio is over time – if there seems like there’s been a shift in quality or style between projects, it could be that they don’t specialize in weddings or aren’t as experienced as they claim to be.

2. Meet With Them In Person

Your photographer will be with you for most of your wedding day, so take the time to meet with them over coffee or at least a virtual coffee chat! This is your time to ask questions about their process like:

  • How experienced are they at shooting weddings?
  • How long does it take them to deliver photos after the event?
  • How many photos will they provide?
  • Do they offer payment plans?
  • What is their communication style?
  • How do they handle any unforeseen issues that may arise on the wedding day?

This will give you an idea whether their services fit your expectations and desires. It’s also an opportunity to make sure you like their personality and would feel comfortable with them by your side. You want someone who has a proven track record of capturing beautiful photos, especially in challenging lighting situations.

3. Consider the Lighting at Your Venue

As a light and airy wedding photographer, this next tip is super important: don’t overlook the lighting at your venue! Experienced photographers know how to make the most of their surroundings, but different venues will require different techniques based on the specific kind of lighting that will be present.

Personally, I shoot at venues with a lot of natural light, which aligns well with my photography style and the desires of my clients. Asking your photographer beforehand about their experience with different kinds of lighting and venues is a great way to ensure you’ll be left with the stunning, timeless images you deserve.

4. Read Reviews + Testimonials

Before booking a wedding photographer, be sure to read reviews and testimonials from past clients. This can help ensure that the person whose services you hire is reliable and experienced enough to meet your expectations on such an important occasion! A lot of wedding photographers also use WeddingWire to share client reviews, so be sure to check if your photographer is listed!

5. Trust Your Instincts

Above all else, trust yourself! You know best when it comes to deciding who should capture such memorable moments on such an important day; so if your gut instinct tells you “yes” then don’t hesitate—go with it! The right photographer can make all the difference when it comes time for creating beautiful memories that will last forever!

Choosing a wedding photographer is not an easy decision, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming either! During this process, consider what style speaks most deeply to you, meet vendors personally, consider venue lighting, read reviews and finally, TRUST yourself. You’ll surely find someone whose work captures every moment perfectly! Good luck!
